Diablo in browser: start with the free demo
Diablo in browser is the friendliest port on the Radiant Optimizer list for newcomers. Diablo Web, a browser adaptation credited on its page to Nikita Maksimov, runs the original 1996 Diablo in a tab. You can start the shareware demo right away with no files, which gives you the first levels of the cathedral beneath Tristram.
For the full game, load the DIABDAT.MPQ file from your own copy. The port reads it locally and unlocks all sixteen dungeon levels and every class.
Where to get DIABDAT.MPQ
DIABDAT.MPQ is the main data archive of Diablo. It sits in the install folder of any PC copy. The easiest legitimate source today is the GOG release, which Blizzard put on sale in 2019 and which also includes the Hellfire expansion. Buy it, install it, and pick DIABDAT.MPQ from that folder when Diablo Web asks for it.
How to play Diablo in browser
Open the port and choose the demo or load your MPQ.
Pick a class: Warrior for melee, Rogue for archery, Sorcerer for magic.
Click to move and attack; right-click casts the selected spell.
Return to Tristram often to sell loot and buy potions.
Characters and progress are stored in your browser. Clearing site data deletes them, so avoid private windows.
About the original Diablo
Blizzard North released Diablo at the end of 1996. Its randomized dungeons, loot and real-time combat defined the action RPG genre and led to Diablo II, Diablo III and Diablo IV. The dark, slow atmosphere of the original is still unique, and running it in a browser is one of the easiest ways to see where the series started.
The web port is part of a broader preservation effort: community projects have rebuilt the Diablo engine so the game runs on modern systems, and that work is what makes a browser version possible.
The Warrior is the easiest start: high health, strong melee and the ability to use heavy armor. The Rogue fights from range with bows, which keeps dangerous monsters at a distance but needs careful positioning. The Sorcerer is the most powerful late in the game thanks to spells like Firebolt and Chain Lightning, but starts fragile and depends on mana. In the shareware demo all three let you explore the first dungeon levels, so it is a good way to choose before you load the full game.
Survival tips for the cathedral
Fight in doorways so monsters come to you one at a time.
Carry healing potions on the belt and use the number keys to drink them quickly.
Identify unknown items with Cain in Tristram before you sell them.
The Butcher on level 2 hits hard. Lure him to a door or fight him with a ranged class.
Diablo in browser vs the later Diablo games
Diablo II added more classes, open outdoor acts and a deeper item system, and later games moved to 3D and online play. The original stands apart: one town, one descending dungeon, and a slow, oppressive atmosphere. Diablo in browser is the easiest way to experience that first game today, and because the demo is free it costs nothing to try.
Tips before you play
Saves live in your browser storage. Clearing site data deletes your characters.
